R. L. Polk’s success depends strongly on the skills and knowledge of our employees, so once we hire the best of the best, we are committed to supporting their continued learning. We seek individuals who take ownership for keeping themselves abreast of the latest techniques, tools and processes and Polk provides a variety of programs to assist in their professional development.
First Day Onboarding
The first day on a new job can make a huge difference in how an employee views the company and his decision. With this in mind, we have a defined agenda for the first day to ensure that new employees feel confident that they made the right decision. New employees receive a Welcome Packet with a wealth of useful information and meet with Human Resources to tour the building, meet executives, learn about benefits, policies, procedures and how to use the phone system and navigate through the company intranet.
New Hire Orientation
During their first few months, new employees attend an all-day session where subject matter experts from various Polk business units, including both the CEO and President provide information on Polk’s history, corporate information, company goals and initiatives, our data processes and the responsibilities of other groups in the company.
Internal Training
Individuals or groups within the company provide a variety of training including technical, product, sales, presentation skills, our LEAD management development program and a variety of informal team development sessions.
In addition, Polk covers the cost of some external training and certification that will enhance the professional development of employees including Six Sigma, Project Management and various technical and professional classes.
Tuition Assistance
Regular full-time employees pursuing a degree program (pertaining to Polk’s business) may be reimbursed for the cost of tuition and lab fees (no administration or registration costs) plus one-half of the cost of books. This reimbursement applies to courses taken under an accredited program, when a grade of B or better is obtained.
Web-based Training
MindLeaders, web-based training available to all Polk employees, offers a myriad of courses in Business Skills, Desktop Applications, Technical and Personal Development to meet the needs of today’s lifelong learners.
Performance Ownership Process
Employees are responsible for their own performance. Together with their manager, they set individual performance and development goals based on key organizational objectives. To ensure that employees are successful, managers provide formal feedback twice a year through Polk’s Performance Review process at which time Individual Development Plans are discussed.
Toastmasters
In the Southfield, Michigan office building, Polk participates in a Toastmasters Club with other companies. The mission of this club is to help men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking—vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding and contribute to the betterment of mankind.
